How to Repair Double Glazed Windows
There are certain indicators that tell you your double-glazed windows need to be repaired. Evidently, water ingress or draughts leaking through the frames are an obvious sign of damage to the window and must be repaired as soon as is possible.
However, misting can also be an indication that your window seals are in need of replacement. Replacing your window seals will solve the issue, and prevent leaks, draughts or condensation.
Broken Panes
Broken glass is one of the most frequent problems that double-glazed windows confront. Double-pane windows are harder to break than single panes, yet accidents do occur. You will want to repair a damaged glass as quickly as possible.
The first step to take is to remove any glass shards that are not completely removed that are still in the frame. Don't forget to wear a pair of gloves and eye protection while doing this, as glass can be sharp. Examine the floor for fragments that are not fixed after the shards have been removed. Also, it is recommended to look for any hooks of metal that may be holding the panes in place and take them out too.
Once the glass has been removed, you will have to take off the old glazing compound (small fasteners which pin the glass in the frame of the window), and replace them with new ones. It's a lengthy process that requires the use of a few tools. This includes latex glazing putty; metal glazing points, pliers, a heat gun; and a putty knife.
It is recommended to start at the top and work your way down as you remove the old points and glazing compound. This will prevent any wood or paint that is removed that is left in the sash from sticking to your tool. If you have to take off some of the wood from the sash employ the utility knife or chipper instead of chemical strippers which can cause damage.
After that you can sand the wood. When the wood is smooth then you can seal it with linseed or clear wood sealer. This will shield it from water and further damage.
There are a few quick fixes you can attempt to repair a damaged double-pane window however, these methods will not repair the crack and should only be used as a temporary solution. The use of silicone caulk can help to seal the gap. However, it is important to use high-quality caulk with the correct application methods.
Condensation
If you've noticed moisture or mist between the glass panes of your double glazing, it's a sign that one of your windows has a failed seal. This could be a problem because it prevents the insulating air or gas from getting trapped between the two glass panes and therefore it can't perform its job properly and this will lead to temperature changes which can cause condensation to form.
A double glazing specialist can fix this issue easily. To fix the problem, your window contractor will take out the affected window sash and IGU (insulating glass unit) before blowing in a new gasket. This will create a strong and airtight seal that will stop condensation from happening again. They'll also use a special drying agent to aid in drying the area and help stop the condensation from happening again.
There may be a mist between glass panes in double-glazed windows, when the frame has changed over time. This could cause the seal to break. This could be a problem because it means your windows won't function properly and will lose energy efficiency.
While it is possible to replace the panes of a double-glazed Windows however, it can be extremely expensive and is typically only required in the event of serious issues with the window that is beyond repair. If you're experiencing problems with your double-glazed windows and are still within the warranty period then you might be able to repair it at no cost or at a reduced price.
It's a good idea to check the conditions of your warranty prior to you contact the company to see whether they are able to solve the issue without having to replace the entire window. Broken Locks & Handles
It can be a huge issue if the handle of your window is damaged, or it is difficult to open. You will not be able use your windows. This can also give burglars the chance to gain entry into your home. There are a few options to fix it but the best option is to speak with an uPVC expert. Based on the severity of the issue, they can usually fix it for you, or at a minimum, give you a replacement handle.
There are many kinds of window locks but the most common one is the Maco or Mila locks that are commonly found on uPVC frames. These locks use bayonet style rods to lock, and they are very easy to seize up. If this occurs, the handle's nose will remain in the popped out position, and will not go back into the locked position wedged. This can be a frustrating issue, but it can be fixed with just a few steps.
To resolve the issue you must first take off the handle, which is easy enough using a screwdriver. Once the handle has been removed, you should then be aware of the screws that secure the lock to the frame. Once the screws are removed, you can attempt to grab the bolts with a wrench or pair of pliers. If this is unsuccessful then you might need to insert the tool into the gap between the frame and window (the gap may differ on the opposite side of the window) and then make an "u" shape with your hands to attempt to grab the shoot bolts.
You can shut your window by adjusting the handle back to its closed position if you're able to free the bolts for shooting. The gearbox (espag or espagnolette.) is most likely damaged, so it will not open with the handle. It is possible to refit the gearbox without the shoot bolts, which means that the window can be opened using the handle (and it will remain secure) however, you'll have to purchase the new handle and gearbox.
Broken Hinges
If your uPVC window hinges are no working properly it is possible to repair or replace them. It could be due to them having been opened with too much force, the hinge dropping and snapping or they had a fault to begin with and it causes problems that make using your window difficult. Thankfully it is simple and quick and doesn't require you to buy a new window instead, you can get the old ones repaired instead.
Remove the hinges. To do this, loosen the screws that attach the frame to the hinges. Once the hinges have been removed then you can replace the boards with plywood that has been cut to the correct size. The plywood should be thicker than the original to support the weight of the window when it is shut and opened. Use wood filler to ensure the hole left behind by the old hinge will not leak or loosen.
After you've replaced hinges and filled the holes, you'll need paint them. Make sure you employ a top-quality paint to ensure that it will last for as long as is possible. After the paint has dried and you are ready to re-attach the window and tighten any loose screws.
Regular maintenance is also important for hinges on windows. Cleaning regularly the track of friction and lubricating the hinge mechanisms will ensure they last longer. You can also apply wood preservatives to shield them from the elements. This will prevent corrosion and ensure they look great for the longest time you can.
Double-glazed windows are more energy efficient than single-glazed ones, and will save you money on heating.
